So what is Bacchanal? Christmas time, 1995, at a gathering of ex-patriate St. Thomians, a picnic was planned to reunite all who could be found for a pahr-tay. In April 1996, a remarkable gathering happened at Snyder Park in Fort Lauderdale - - feasting on chicken legs and jumping up to the live sound of the Mightey Whitey and recordings of Brownie on WSTA! Folks arrived from near and far . . . from New Zealand, Hawaii, France and right here in Fort Lauderdale! From that fateful weekend, there has been an annual Bacchanal in a different part of Florida for each and every year since. As many as 600 St. Thomas residents (and honorary residents), past and present have gathered for a weekend-long party to reminisce, catch up, renew acquaintances, laugh and share music and fun with friends new and old. |
